What’s In Season
Take a look at What’s In Season this month at the Markets!
What’s In Season
FRUIT
It’s a fantastic time of year for produce, with perfect growing conditions - neither too hot nor too cold - providing great value vegetables. Meanwhile, summer fruit is at its magnificent peak.
TROPICAL: Watermelons are great value and eating well. Pines are also eating well. Aussie Lychees have started with our favourite variety, Fay Zee Sue, starting this week.
MANGO: It looks like a cracking season for mangoes after a slow year last year with limited supply, which means higher prices. We always recommend a KP for flavour and consistency. Remember, don’t store them in the fridge!
CHERRIES: Really tasty cherries in season/available, including local fruit. Looks like a good season so far.
GRAPES: Australian grapes are now in season, though they are early in terms of range and price.
TRY: Yuzu lemons! We love this gorgeous Japanese variety of lemons. The juice is sweeter and more complex than a regular lemon; use the zest.
PASSIONFRUIT: Eating well at the moment.
BERRIES: All berries are good at the moment. Raspberries have good value.
STONEFRUIT: We are having a great season for stonefruit so far. We recommend taking advantage of apricots being in season, which has a shorter peak season than other stonefruit.
CITRUS: As always, the warmer months are not the time of year for lemons, limes and other citrus, just when you want them for your summer drinks! Lemons are not great, and limes are very scarce!
BANANAS: They are still scarce, but prices usually start to fall in the next few weeks around this time of year (as the lunchbox trade drops off, perhaps?).
VEGETABLES
TOMATOES: Good value! We’re currently loving heirloom tomatoes as they are eating really well.
ASPARAGUS: This is a great time of year for Aussie asparagus. It is a great vegetable to roast, steam, boil, or barbeque. It is very tender at the moment and of great value.
BEANS & PEAS: Round beans are better value this week. Local snaps and snow peas.
AVOCADO: Reids and Gwens are in season. Hass still good.
RECOMMEND/GOOD VALUE: Cucumbers, broccoli, pumpkin.
GARLIC: Aussie garlic is in season.
POTATOES: There are many new varieties in season, which means a good, fresh-looking potato with a high moisture content.
FLOWERS: This is the best time of year for flowers with great growing conditions. Our favouite’s currently in season include peonies, hydrangeas, king proteas and kangaroo paw.
